We know that keeping up with all the best new music can be a chore for some. But for us here at The Infinite Purple, it’s our favorite thing to do.
That’s why we’re bringing you our top picks each week from New Music Friday (not just the playlist, but everything new from the week). We’ll keep you updated on what’s new and good so that you can stay up to date without all the work!
Read through or make your way to the bottom for the full Spotify playlist of our Friday discoveries.
Over Now – Calvin Harris (ft. The Weeknd)
The clear winner of the week comes from two artists who have shown massive musical growth over the last few years, budding into matured funk master superstars. Kind of like when Bruno Mars & Mark Ronson linked up back in 2014, we get the conjoining of two incredible artists blending their styles and sounds into one funky ballad.
Love Reggae – JoJo (ft. Tinashe)
Well this is a clooose second. JoJo just released her new album “good to know” and this song stands the fork out. Which is not surprising seeing as it features the wonderful Tinashe. The hard hitting beat mixed with JoJo and Tinashe’s vocals make this an enthusiastically vibey song.
Untitled #4 – The Avett Brothers
As much as it pains me to promote a song called “Untitled #4,” few times do I come across an Avett Brothers song that doesn’t make me want to laugh and cry and hike a mountain all at the same time. This song is the same. “Untitled 4,” off their new album The Third Gleam, feels as though you’re sitting by the fire at your campsite, or driving down a dirt road content with life.
Better Than I Imagined – Robert Glasper (ft. H.E.R. & Meshell Ndegeocello)
Here we go with another dream collab. One of our favorite artists and prolific pianist/producer, Robert Glasper, teams up with singer/songwriter H.E.R. and Meshell Ndegeocello to craft this laid back, poetic track.
Movin’ On – India Shawn (ft. Anderson .Paak)
India Shawn’s voice drives this song forward as her and AP weave through the R&B tapestry of “Movin’ On”. Anderson comes in with a classic, bumping verse to split up the song.
Girl With The Bat – Idris Elba (ft. Shadow Boxxer) + Eli & Fur Remix
My man Idris always delivers. Whether he’s fighting bad guys on the screen or making some heavy hitting house music, Idris Elba always seems to be on his game. Here we get another pumping house track from Idris, plus a more tribal version remixed by Eli & Fur.
Album Black Pumas – Black Pumas
Texas duo Black Pumas delivers us a delicious new self-titled album which blends rock and funk effortlessly to deliver an infectious old school vibe. This album is an instant classic and highly recommended to listen all the way through. Check out the album below – some of our favorite tracks off of it are “Colors,” “Red Rover,” “Fire,” “I’m Ready” & “Black Moon Rising.”
Album ENERGY – Disclosure
I know we all have been waiting for this one. Disclosure’s newest album since they began their new funky era has arrived and it is glorious. Some standout tracks on the album are “Lavender” with Channel Tres, “Douha (Mali Mali)” with Fatoumata Diawara, “Birthday” with Kehlani & Syd, and “Tondo” with Eko Roosevelt.
Album Candid – Whitney
American sweetheart band Whitney have released a quality new album, titled Candid, a year after their last album Forever Turned Around. Just try to listen to this album and not picture yourself sprawled out on large patch of grass soaking in the sunshine and thinking about time lost. Standout tracks include “A.M. AM,” “High on a Rocky Ledge,” and “Hammond Song.”
And a few extra tracks that stood out this week:
Hreshikesh Hirway (Song Exploder): “Now here is Infinite Purple with New Music Friday, in it’s entirety…”
